Digital Menu Boards: The Restaurant Owner's Complete Guide
Digital menu boards are the single highest-ROI investment most restaurant owners can make in their signage. Here’s everything you need to know to make the switch.
Why restaurants switch to digital menu boards
The numbers make the case clearly:
- 23% average increase in upsell and combo meal revenue after switching to digital
- Zero print costs — no more reprinting when prices change or items sell out
- Dayparting — your breakfast menu automatically swaps to lunch at 11am without anyone touching a screen
- Instant updates — change a price or pull a sold-out item across all locations in 30 seconds
What you need
Hardware
Any screen with an HDMI input works. For a restaurant environment, we recommend:
- Commercial displays (not consumer TVs) for 16/7 or 24/7 operation
- High-brightness displays (1,000+ nits) for window-facing or well-lit environments
- Alliance Player plugged into the HDMI port, or a Samsung/LG commercial display with built-in SoC
Software
R52 Digital Signage Alliance includes 300+ restaurant-specific menu templates. Connect your POS for automatic sold-out item removal.
Designing your digital menu
Good menu board design follows three rules:
- Hierarchy — your highest-margin items get the most visual real estate
- Contrast — food photography should pop against a dark background
- Legibility — minimum 36pt font for menu items, 24pt for descriptions
Avoid the common mistake of putting too much on one screen. A focused menu board outperforms a cluttered one every time.
Dayparting setup
Configure your menu board to show:
- Breakfast menu — open until 11:00am
- Lunch menu — 11:00am to 3:00pm
- Dinner menu — 3:00pm onwards
- Late night menu — 10:00pm to close (if applicable)
Each schedule is set once and runs automatically every day.
POS integration
Connect R52 Digital Signage Alliance to your POS system for:
- 86ing — sold-out items are automatically hidden from the menu board
- Specials push — today’s specials uploaded once, appear on all boards
- Price sync — price changes in POS reflect on boards within minutes
Supported POS systems include Square, Toast, Lightspeed, Revel and most others via API.
Franchise and multi-location management
Head office manages the master menu template. Each location can:
- Select from approved item images
- Set local prices within approved ranges
- Add local specials with approval workflow
No location can break the brand.
