Digital Signage for Gyms & Fitness Centres — Motivate Members, Fill Classes, Reduce Churn

· R52 Alliance Team · 3 min read

A gym floor screen showing live music, motivational quotes and the leaderboard for today’s class challenge creates energy. A screen showing static printed timetables does not. Digital signage in fitness facilities has evolved from an optional extra to a core part of the member experience — and the gap between gyms that use it well and those that don’t is widening.

Class timetables and schedule management

The most immediately useful application of digital signage in a gym is the class timetable. When synced to your class booking software, it displays live class availability, instructor names, remaining spots, and upcoming classes — without any manual updates.

The Alliance platform integrates with Mindbody to pull class schedules automatically. When a class fills up, the screen shows “Full” alongside an option to join the waitlist. When an instructor cancels, the cancellation appears on screen within minutes.

A well-designed class timetable display drives class participation. Members who can see the next available class while they’re on the gym floor are significantly more likely to attend it.

Motivational content

The gym floor is one of the most receptive environments for motivational content. Members are physically active, slightly uncomfortable, and primed for encouragement. Research shows that motivational content displayed during exercise:

  • Increases workout duration by an average of 12%
  • Reduces perceived exertion
  • Increases likelihood of returning for another session

The Alliance platform has 70+ gym and fitness templates including motivational quote slideshows, achievement spotlights (“Member of the Month”), milestone celebrations (“1,000 workouts in this gym today”), and countdown timers for workout intervals.

Personal training promotion

Digital signage on the gym floor is prime real estate for promoting premium services. Use screens near the PT area to showcase before-and-after success stories, introduce your personal training team with photos and specialisms, and promote introductory PT offers.

Video testimonials from existing PT clients play extremely well on gym floor screens — a 60-second video of a member describing their transformation is more persuasive than any printed poster.

Member recognition

Recognition drives retention. A “New member this month” slide with the member’s name (with their permission), a “Streak of the month” for the member who has attended most consecutive days, and a “Class champion” leaderboard for the most enthusiastic attender of your high-energy classes all create community and give members a reason to keep coming back.

The Alliance Employee Recognition widget can be repurposed for member recognition — upload a photo and name, set the display schedule, and the screen does the rest.

Operational information

Screens positioned at the entrance and exit of the gym serve operational purposes efficiently:

Opening hours changes for bank holidays, maintenance closures and special events can be updated instantly without printing new posters.

Equipment out of service notifications reduce frustration for members who arrive expecting to use a specific machine.

Safety reminders about spotter requirements, correct equipment use and emergency procedures displayed on a rotation keep compliance visible without requiring staff to deliver repetitive briefings.

Group exercise studio screens

Group exercise studios benefit from screens that display the class currently in progress — a countdown timer showing how long is left, the music playlist, and the next drill or exercise. The Alliance platform’s countdown widget is particularly popular in HIIT and circuit training environments.

Managing multiple locations

Multi-site gym operators can manage all locations from a single Alliance dashboard. Central marketing teams can push seasonal campaigns, membership promotions and new class launch announcements to every location simultaneously, while local teams manage site-specific class schedules and operational information.

The Alliance platform’s enterprise plan includes role-based access that lets central teams manage brand content while giving local gym managers control over their own facility’s day-to-day information.

Getting started

The Alliance free plan includes 1 screen and access to all 70+ fitness templates. Start with a screen in your most high-traffic area — typically the entrance or the gym floor — and test what content generates the most engagement. Add screens incrementally as you identify the most valuable use cases for your specific facility.
