Digital Signage for Airports — Flight Information, Retail, and Wayfinding

Airport Digital Signage: Scale and Complexity
Airports operate 24 hours a day, 365 days a year, serving passengers who may be confused, stressed, running late, or travelling in an unfamiliar country. The digital signage infrastructure of a major international airport is one of the most demanding environments for screen content management.
A large international airport may have 5,000+ screens managed across terminal buildings, retail areas, airside zones, baggage halls, car parks, and ground transportation areas.
Flight Information Display Systems (FIDS)
The FIDS is the backbone of airport passenger communication.
Standard FIDS content:
- Flight number and destination/origin
- Airline and codeshare partners
- Scheduled and estimated departure/arrival times
- Gate number and gate changes
- Status (On Time / Boarding / Gate Closed / Delayed / Cancelled / Landed)
- Check-in desk allocation (departures)
- Baggage carousel allocation (arrivals)
Data sources: FIDS data comes from the airport’s departure control system (DCS), integrated with airline operational systems. The Alliance connects to standard airport data feeds including AODB (Airport Operational Data Base) and direct ATC feeds.
Redundancy: FIDS is mission-critical infrastructure. Alliance deployments in airports use redundant server configurations with failover, and all Alliance Players cache the last received data locally to continue displaying content if the network connection is temporarily lost.
Wayfinding and Terminal Navigation
Airport wayfinding is complex. Passengers need to navigate:
- Departures vs. arrivals entry points
- Check-in zone by airline or flight reference
- Security queues and fast-track lanes
- Passport control (for international arrivals)
- Gates (numbered, lettered, or named)
- Terminal connections (buses, transit trains between terminals)
- Retail and food zones
- Toilets, prayer rooms, medical facilities
- Ground transportation (taxi, bus, rail)
Static wayfinding screens at decision points show zone maps and directional information.
Interactive kiosks allow passengers to enter their flight number and receive a personalised wayfinding route with estimated walking times.
Integration: The Alliance integrates with airport mapping platforms (LocusLabs, Pointr) to display accurate indoor maps.
Retail and Food and Beverage
Airside retail and F&B are significant airport revenue streams. Digital signage throughout the retail zone supports both operators and the airport:
Retail screens:
- Brand advertising (duty-free spirits, luxury goods, travel accessories)
- Promotion mechanics (“Save 20% on perfume today only”)
- Last-minute travel essentials
- Currency exchange rates
F&B menu boards:
- Full menu display with pricing
- Live availability (sold out items removed automatically)
- Allergen information
- Ordering and queue management
Advertising screens: Premium advertising inventory in airside areas commands premium rates. Alliance supports programmatic DOOH integration, audience measurement, and proof-of-play reporting.
Gate Area Screens
Screens at departure gates provide passenger-specific information:
- Flight details for the gate’s current service
- Boarding status and sequence (Priority / Zone 1 / Zone 2 / General)
- Gate change notifications
- Estimated departure time updates
- Boarding door information (for aircraft with dual boarding)
- Destination weather and time zone information
Premium content: Gate dwell time can be 30–60 minutes. Screens showing destination content (city guide, weather, local attractions, currency information) improve the passenger experience during this wait.
Baggage Reclaim Screens
Arrivals baggage halls have specific display requirements:
- Flight-to-carousel allocation
- Estimated baggage delivery time
- Special items delivery location (oversized baggage, pushchairs)
- Status updates (First bag on belt, Baggage complete)
- Connecting flights and onward travel options
Security Queue Management
Security queues are a pain point for passengers. Screens in the queue area:
- Current estimated wait time
- Security preparation reminders (remove liquids, laptops from bags)
- FastTrack availability
- Connecting flight advice (“If your flight departs within 60 minutes, proceed to the front of the queue”)
Ground Transportation and Car Parks
Screens outside the terminal support ground transportation:
- Car park availability and pricing
- Bus and rail connection schedules
- Taxi and rideshare pickup locations
- Rail station connection details
Multi-Terminal Operations
Large airports operating multiple terminals need centralised management with terminal-specific customisation. The Alliance’s permission structure allows:
- Central airport operations team managing network-wide alerts
- Each terminal operator managing their terminal’s screens
- Airlines managing gate screens for their own flights
- Retailers managing their own screens within their units
