Digital Signage for Manufacturing — Factory Floor Displays & Safety Boards

Digital safety and KPI boards on a factory floor

Why Manufacturing Needs Digital Signage

The factory floor is one of the hardest environments to communicate in. Workers wear PPE including ear protection. The noise level prevents verbal communication. Workers are spread across a large floor area and may not check email for an entire shift. And yet, accurate, timely information is critical for safety, quality, and production targets.

Digital signage cuts through. A screen visible from every workstation delivers the information that matters, to the person who needs it, without requiring them to stop work.

Safety Communication

OSHA requires prominent display of safety information in many manufacturing environments. Digital signage satisfies this requirement while dramatically improving compliance rates compared to static posters that become “invisible” through familiarity.

What to display:

  • Days since last recordable incident (the most effective single safety metric)
  • Current PPE requirements for each zone
  • Hazard awareness (new machinery, temporary walkway changes, chemical handling reminders)
  • Emergency procedures and evacuation routes
  • Near-miss reporting reminders

Emergency override — The Alliance’s emergency alert feature overrides all content on every screen in a zone instantly. When a fire alarm sounds or an evacuation is ordered, every screen displays the evacuation route for that building section.

Production KPIs — The Digital Andon Board

Traditional andon boards (the coloured lights above a production line showing status) are increasingly being replaced or supplemented by digital KPI screens that show richer information:

  • Current production rate vs. target
  • Units produced this shift / day / week
  • Defect rate and quality metrics
  • OEE (Overall Equipment Effectiveness)
  • Downtime reasons and duration
  • Upcoming preventive maintenance

The Alliance integrates with MES (Manufacturing Execution Systems), ERP platforms (SAP, Oracle), and SCADA systems via REST API or database connection to pull live production data.

Shift Handover Communication

The 15 minutes of a shift handover are critical — information that doesn’t transfer means repeated mistakes. Digital signage running during the handover period can display:

  • Outstanding issues from the previous shift
  • Targets for the upcoming shift
  • Planned maintenance windows
  • Quality alerts on specific product batches
  • Visitor or audit notifications

Quality Alerts

When a quality issue is identified — a batch that may be non-conforming, a measurement out of spec — an alert can be pushed to every screen in the affected production area within seconds. Workers can pause work on the suspect product immediately, without waiting for a supervisor to walk the floor.

Environmental Monitoring

Connect the Alliance to your environmental sensors and display temperature, humidity, particulate levels, and noise readings. When a threshold is approached, the display changes automatically to alert workers before a violation occurs.

Hardware for Industrial Environments

Factory floors present unique hardware challenges:

  • Temperature — Commercial screens operate to 40°C. Beyond that, industrial-rated enclosures are needed.
  • Dust and moisture — IP-rated enclosures protect screens in dusty or wet processing environments.
  • Vibration — Solid-state Alliance Players (no spinning hard drives) are unaffected by vibration.
  • Screen size — 55” minimum for screens viewed from 6+ metres. 75”+ for large floor areas.
  • Brightness — 500+ nits for areas with windows or skylights. Standard 400 nits for enclosed factory floors.

Getting Started

Start with safety boards. They’re the highest-value, most defensible first deployment, and they satisfy the safety compliance requirement that makes the investment easy to approve. Add production KPI screens in the second phase, integrating with your MES or ERP.
