Digital Signage for Pharmacies — Patient Education and Retail Promotion

Digital Screens in the Pharmacy
A pharmacy is both a healthcare setting and a retail environment. Digital signage must serve both roles: delivering accurate, trustworthy health information to patients, and promoting the retail products and services that sustain the business.
The balance between health content and commercial content is an important design consideration. A screen that only sells undermines the clinical trust that patients place in their pharmacist. A screen that is purely educational misses the revenue opportunity. The right ratio is roughly 60% health content, 40% commercial content.
Patient Waiting Area Screens
The dispensing wait is the most important screen moment in a pharmacy. Patients waiting for their prescription are a captive, health-focused audience. This is an ideal time for health education content:
Condition-specific content:
- Information about the conditions most commonly managed in that pharmacy (hypertension, diabetes, COPD, mental health)
- Medication adherence reminders (why it matters to take medication as prescribed)
- Side effect management guidance
- When to come back or seek further help
Seasonal health campaigns:
- Flu vaccination — from September through winter
- Travel health and vaccinations — from April through August
- Hay fever and allergy season — from March through July
- Winter health (cold and flu, vitamin D deficiency)
- Mental health awareness (linked to national campaigns: Mental Health Awareness Week, World Mental Health Day)
NHS and public health campaigns: The Alliance provides a library of NHS-approved health campaign content that pharmacies can use directly. This content is reviewed and updated to reflect current public health guidance.
Prescription Status Board
A prescription status board replaces the need for staff to call out patient names, reducing noise and protecting patient privacy:
- Reference number displayed when prescription is ready (not name)
- “Number 47 — your prescription is ready at counter 2”
- Current wait time estimate for new prescription drop-offs
Integration: The Alliance integrates with dispensing systems (Rx Web, Analyst, ProScript, EMIS Pharmacy) to pull prescription status automatically.
OTC Product Promotions
The pharmacy’s retail section generates significant margin. Digital screens near OTC displays drive awareness and purchase:
- Featured product of the week with photography and brief benefit description
- Seasonal OTC promotions (antihistamines in hay fever season, cold remedies in winter, sun protection in summer)
- Vitamins and supplements promotions
- Baby and infant products
- Skincare and beauty ranges
Placement: A screen near the retail display area, not at the dispensing counter. The dispensing counter is a clinical interaction space; promotion belongs in the retail zone.
Services Promotion
Modern pharmacies offer services beyond dispensing. Screens inform patients about services they may not know exist:
- NHS services: Blood pressure checks, hypertension case finding, smoking cessation, weight management, oral contraception service, emergency contraception, treatment of minor ailments
- Private services: Travel vaccinations, flu vaccination, ear irrigation, vitamin B12 injections, health checks (cholesterol, blood glucose)
- Consultation service: How to book a private consultation with the pharmacist
Screens that explain these services generate appointments and revenue from patients who didn’t know to ask.
Medicine Use Reviews and Clinical Services
For the clinical team:
- MUR (Medicine Use Review) availability
- NMS (New Medicine Service) for patients starting new medicines
- Blood pressure monitoring service
- Pharmacy First information (new NHS clinical pathway service)
Health Screening and Appointment Booking
Screens with QR codes allow patients to self-refer to pharmacy services:
- “Check your blood pressure — book a 10-minute check at reception”
- “Starting a new medicine? Ask for your New Medicine Service appointment”
- “Free NHS health check available — speak to our pharmacist”
Staff and Locum Information Screens
A screen in the dispensary or consultation room (staff-facing only):
- Today’s staff rota and responsible pharmacist
- Locum briefing information
- Drug shortage alerts and substitution guidance
- Controlled drug count reminders
- GPhC inspection preparation reminders
Compliance Considerations
Pharmacy digital signage must comply with:
- MHRA regulations on advertising medicines (prescription-only medicines cannot be advertised to the public; OTC medicines must be advertised within MHRA guidelines)
- ASA CAP Code for health claims (do not make misleading health claims about products or services)
- NHS brand guidelines if using NHS logo or referring to NHS services
The Alliance’s pharmacy content library uses pre-approved content that meets these requirements. For custom content, consult your Responsible Pharmacist before publishing.
