Digital Signage for Quick Service Restaurants (QSR) — Drive-Thru & Counter

The QSR Display Ecosystem
A quick service restaurant operation typically uses digital signage in four distinct locations, each with different technical requirements and content goals.
Drive-Thru Menu Boards
The drive-thru board is the highest-revenue display location in most QSR operations. Best practices:
Board count — Most QSR drive-thrus use two boards: a preview board (100–150 metres from the speaker post) and a main order board. The preview board shows the full menu; the main board focuses on current promotions and the order confirmation.
Daypart scheduling — Breakfast, lunch, afternoon snack, dinner, and late night menus load automatically. No staff member needs to change the content.
Dynamic pricing — Display prices that adjust automatically based on time of day or promotional period without staff intervention.
Wait time display — Integration with the drive-thru timer system displays estimated wait time, managing customer expectations and reducing drive-offs.
Upsell automation — When a customer reaches the speaker post, the board transitions to show relevant upsell items (beverages with food orders, desserts after main courses, meal upgrades).
Counter/Front-of-House Boards
The boards behind the counter serve the same function as the drive-thru board for walk-in customers. Best practices:
Height and size — Position the bottom of the board at 2.2–2.4m from the floor so it’s visible over the heads of customers standing at the counter. Minimum 55” per panel.
Brightness — 700+ nits for areas with natural light from windows or skylights.
Number of panels — Typically 3–5 panels depending on menu complexity. Group items logically (beverages, mains, sides, combo meals).
Featured item spotlight — Reserve one panel or a section for a rotating featured item with photography.
Kitchen Display Systems (KDS)
Customer-facing screens showing order status (“Order #247 — Ready”) serve two purposes: they set expectations and they reduce the number of customers asking staff if their order is ready.
The Alliance’s order status widget integrates with major POS systems (Square, Toast, Lightspeed, NCR, Oracle MICROS) to display real-time order status without manual updates.
Lobby/Seating Area Screens
While customers eat, secondary screens in the dining area can:
- Promote the app and loyalty programme
- Display local community content
- Show sports scores or news (with appropriate licensing for broadcasting)
- Promote catering and delivery services
- Run kid-friendly entertainment content in family areas
POS Integration
Connecting the Alliance to your POS system enables automatic content that follows your business:
- Item availability — Out-of-stock items are removed from the menu board automatically
- Inventory-triggered promotions — Excess stock of a specific item triggers a promotional display
- Sales leaderboard — Gamify team performance with live sales data on staff-facing screens
Technical Requirements for QSR
Commercial-grade screens — QSR environments are demanding. Screens must operate 18–24 hours per day, withstand splashed liquids near the counter, and survive grease and airborne contaminants from the kitchen. Specify commercial screens rated for continuous operation (not consumer TVs).
Brightness for drive-thru — Outdoor and semi-outdoor drive-thru environments require 1,500–3,000 nit screens to remain readable in direct sunlight.
Weatherproofing — Drive-thru boards must withstand temperature extremes (-20°C to +50°C), rain, and wind. Specify IP65-rated enclosures for all outdoor boards.
Redundancy — A dead menu board loses revenue. Alliance Players store content locally and continue playing if the network fails. For critical boards, deploy two players in a hot-standby configuration.
