Digital Signage for Schools — From Reception to Classroom

Digital notice board in a school corridor showing today's events and achievements

Digital Signage in Schools

Primary and secondary schools manage communication across a diverse audience: students, teachers, support staff, parents, and visitors. Digital signage addresses communication gaps that paper notice boards, email newsletters, and school apps cannot reach.

A screen in the school entrance communicates to everyone who walks in. A screen in the corridor communicates to students who walk past. A screen in the staffroom communicates to the team during the working day.

Reception and Entrance Displays

The school reception is the first impression for parents, governors, Ofsted inspectors, and new students. A professionally designed screen in reception shows:

Standard content:

  • School name, logo, and strapline
  • Today’s date and weather
  • Welcoming messages (“Welcome to [School Name]”)
  • Key school values and ethos

Dynamic content:

  • Today’s events (school trips, sports fixtures, special assemblies)
  • Visitor signing-in reminders (all visitors must sign in at reception)
  • COVID/health protocol reminders (when applicable)
  • Term dates and upcoming holidays

Safeguarding: Visitor information must comply with safeguarding requirements. The Alliance’s screen scheduling lets safeguarding reminders appear prominently during visitor arrival times.

Corridor and Common Area Notice Boards

Replacing physical notice boards with digital screens solves the “outdated information” problem permanently:

  • Today’s lunch menu
  • Weekly sports fixtures and results
  • Club and society meeting information
  • Achievement recognition (student of the week, sports results, art competitions)
  • School council notices
  • Careers information for older students (sixth form, leavers)

Staff management: Each head of department or year head can manage their own content zone, with central oversight from the communications or admin team.

Safeguarding and Emergency Alerts

Schools have specific safeguarding obligations. Digital signage supports safeguarding in several ways:

Lockdown and emergency alerts: The Alliance’s emergency override function pushes an urgent message to ALL screens in the school simultaneously:

  • Lockdown procedures
  • Evacuation routes and muster points
  • Severe weather closures
  • Site security alerts

The Head Teacher or designated safeguarding lead can trigger a network-wide alert from a mobile phone in seconds.

Routine safeguarding content:

  • Online safety reminders (cyberbullying, safe internet use)
  • Mental health support resources (Childline number, school counsellor contact)
  • Anti-bullying reminders
  • Peer mentoring programme promotions

Canteen and Dining Hall Displays

The school canteen has specific display needs:

  • Today’s full menu (hot, cold, allergen indicators)
  • Meal deal pricing
  • Allergy information (“speak to staff for allergen details”)
  • Healthy eating messaging
  • Queue management (“Year 7 and Year 8 — please use the North entrance today”)

The Alliance integrates with school catering management systems (Tucasi, ParentPay, Dolce) to pull live menu data automatically.

Curriculum Support Screens

Screens in classrooms and subject-specific areas can support teaching and learning:

Science labs:

  • Safety protocols for specific experiments
  • Scientific vocabulary and diagrams
  • Curriculum connections to real-world applications

Languages:

  • Vocabulary of the week
  • Cultural content from target language countries
  • Countdown to speaking assessments

Maths:

  • Times tables rotation
  • Mathematical vocabulary
  • Real-world maths applications

Teachers manage classroom screens independently, using the Alliance app on their tablet or laptop.

Parent Communication

Screens in areas where parents gather — reception, the school car park entrance, the sports hall during events — communicate with parents directly:

  • Key dates and upcoming events
  • Appeals for volunteers (reading helpers, trip support)
  • Uniform and equipment reminders
  • Academy trust and governor board information
  • Parent consultation evening schedules

Achievement and Recognition

Students are motivated by recognition. Dedicated recognition screens in prominent areas:

  • Student of the week (with photo and brief achievement description)
  • Sports results and fixtures
  • Arts competition winners
  • Academic competition results (Maths Challenge, Science Olympiad)
  • House competition standings

GDPR note: Student photos on screens require parental consent. Ensure your consent processes cover digital screen use specifically.

Sixth Form and Careers

Sixth form areas have more sophisticated communication needs:

  • University application timeline and UCAS deadlines
  • Open day dates and university visits
  • Careers events and employer visits
  • Graduate employment destinations of recent leavers
  • Scholarship and bursary opportunities

Implementation in Schools

Budget: Schools typically work within tight budgets. The Alliance’s pricing is competitive for single-site schools, with education discounts available. Start with one or two high-impact screens (reception, main corridor).

Staff training: A single member of admin or communications staff managing the system is sufficient for most schools. The Alliance’s intuitive interface requires no technical background.

Internet reliability: School networks can be unreliable. The Alliance Player’s local caching means content continues playing even when the internet is down.
