Digital screens showing class schedules in a sports and leisure centre

The Leisure Centre Communications Challenge

A leisure centre offers dozens of activities across multiple facilities — pool, gym, squash courts, fitness classes, sports hall. Communicating what’s on, what’s available, and what’s new to members and visitors across this complex environment is a genuine challenge.

Digital signage creates a persistent, always-current information channel that works across all these spaces without requiring staff to update notice boards or answer the same questions repeatedly.

Class Schedules and Live Updates

The most valuable application for most fitness facilities: a live class schedule display that shows today’s timetable, with real-time updates when classes fill up, are cancelled, or have last-minute changes.

  • Today’s classes by time, type, instructor, and room
  • Live capacity counter (“10 spaces remaining”)
  • Online booking QR code for the next class
  • Waiting list status (“Joining the waiting list for tonight’s Pilates”)

The Alliance integrates with leading fitness booking platforms — Mindbody, Perfect Gym, Virtuagym, ClubRight — to pull live class data automatically.

Pool and Facility Status

A screen at the pool entrance displaying:

  • Current lane occupancy (casual swim, lane swim, lessons)
  • Current pool temperature
  • Upcoming lane closures for lessons or events
  • Safety rules and depth information

This information was previously managed by a bored-looking member of staff holding a clipboard. A live screen eliminates this role for routine information.

Court and Pitch Bookings

A screen outside each court or pitch showing:

  • Today’s bookings
  • Current booking occupant
  • Next booking time
  • “Available until X — book at the front desk”

Reduces conflicts over courts and reduces the number of “is court 3 free?” questions to reception.

Member Promotions

Digital screens are more effective than notice boards for member promotions:

  • Personal training packages
  • Member referral offers
  • Off-peak membership deals
  • Café and nutrition bar promotions
  • Merchandise and equipment promotions

Animation and professional photography in a promotion screen perform significantly better than a typed A4 notice on a corkboard.

Motivation and Community

Fitness facilities have an opportunity to build community through digital content:

Member spotlights — “Member of the month” with a brief Q&A and fitness journey. Members love recognition, and others find it inspiring.

Challenge leaderboards — Live standings for fitness challenges (steps, classes attended, swim distance) build friendly competition and engagement.

Progress stories — With permission, before-and-after success stories inspire the members who are earlier on their journey.

Motivational content — Inspirational quotes, training tips, nutrition guidance in a digestible format.

Club Announcements

Digital screens in reception, the gym floor, and common areas carry club news:

  • Facility closures and maintenance windows
  • New equipment arrivals
  • New classes and instructors
  • Club events and social occasions
  • Charity events and community participation

Café and Nutrition Displays

If the facility has a café or nutrition bar:

  • Menu board with pricing and nutritional information
  • Today’s featured items and specials
  • Post-workout nutrition guidance (linking what’s available to what’s beneficial after specific classes)
  • Protein shake and supplement information
