Digital Signage for Student Unions and University Common Areas

Student Engagement in a Distracted World
Today’s students are accustomed to rich, digital-first media experiences. Static notice boards and poster columns feel anachronistic. Digital signage speaks the language students are already fluent in — and placed correctly, it’s impossible to ignore.
Events Promotion
Events are the lifeblood of a students’ union. A poorly attended event is a failure of communications as much as a failure of programming. Digital screens in high-traffic areas — the student union building, the library entrance, the sports centre — promote events in a way posters simply cannot match:
- Animated event graphics that catch the eye
- Countdown timers (“Freshers’ Ball — 3 days to go”)
- Ticket availability (“Last 50 tickets”)
- Post-event highlights and photos
- Sports fixtures and results
Welfare and Support Resources
Students’ unions have a responsibility for student welfare. Digital screens are an effective way to communicate support resources — particularly for students who might not proactively seek help:
- Mental health resources (Student Minds, Samaritans, Crisis lines)
- Sexual health and consent information
- Financial hardship support (hardship fund, food bank)
- Academic support (academic appeals, mitigating circumstances)
- Disability and accessibility services
- Anonymous reporting mechanisms
The Alliance’s scheduling system can ensure welfare content appears regularly throughout the week, not just during Freshers’ Week.
Social Media Wall
A moderated social wall pulling student posts from Instagram and X (Twitter) with the university hashtag creates a sense of community — students love seeing their posts on the big screen, and others discover events and activities they didn’t know about.
The key word is moderated: all posts must be approved before appearing. The Alliance’s moderation queue makes this quick and easy.
Society and Club Directory
A rotating directory of societies and clubs available at the union helps new students discover communities they want to join:
- Society name and brief description
- Meeting times and location
- How to join
- Current officers
Careers and Employability
Students’ unions often partner with the careers service on employability content:
- Graduate job fair dates
- Employer spotlights
- Internship and placement opportunities
- CV and application workshops
- Employer presentations and networking events
Equality and Diversity Campaigns
Students’ unions lead on equality and diversity campaigns throughout the year. Digital screens carry these messages at scale:
- Black History Month
- LGBT+ History Month
- International Women’s Day
- Mental Health Awareness Week
- Disability Awareness Month
Scheduled in advance, these campaigns appear automatically on the right dates.
Food and Drink
If the students’ union operates catering:
- Daily menu and specials
- Deals and offers
- Meal deal promotions
- Allergen information
- Sustainable food sourcing information
Student Media
Student media teams (newspapers, radio, TV stations) can contribute content to union screens, giving student journalists a real publishing outlet and providing the screens with student-created content that feels authentic and relevant.
Student Officer Elections
During election periods, the Alliance’s election content system allows:
- Candidate profiles and manifestos (equal display time for all candidates)
- Voting reminder screens and QR codes to the voting platform
- Results display when polls close
Strict equal display rules during elections are managed through the Alliance’s scheduling and audit system.
