Digital Signage for Franchise Networks — Central Control, Local Flexibility

The Franchise Signage Challenge
A franchise network of 300 locations has competing requirements: the franchisor needs brand consistency and compliance across the network; franchisees need to communicate locally relevant information to their customers. Digital signage must serve both needs simultaneously.
The Alliance’s franchise management model addresses this directly.
The Two-Layer Content Model
The Alliance franchise model uses two content layers:
Layer 1: Franchisor content — Set by the franchisor’s marketing team. Appears on all screens in all locations. Cannot be overridden by franchisees. Includes brand campaigns, product launches, national promotions, compliance content.
Layer 2: Franchisee content — Set by the individual franchisee within zones and time allocations defined by the franchisor. Local promotions, staff recognition, local events, local pricing variations.
The screen displays both layers simultaneously (using zones) or in a defined ratio (e.g., franchisor content gets 70% of playlist time, franchisee gets 30%).
Franchisor Controls
Brand standards — The franchisor defines the allowed fonts, colours, and layouts. Franchisees can’t create off-brand content.
Content approval — Optional: franchisee content requires approval from the franchisor before going live. Prevents non-compliant content appearing on screens.
Emergency override — The franchisor can push an emergency alert to every screen in the network instantly.
Compliance monitoring — The franchisor can view what any screen in the network is showing at any time.
Reporting — Network-wide content performance and uptime reporting for the franchisor’s management team.
Franchisee Capabilities
Within the limits set by the franchisor:
- Upload and schedule their own promotions in their allocated zones and time
- Access the brand’s approved template library to create compliant content quickly
- Display locally relevant content (local team sponsorship, local events, local offers)
- Manage content for their own locations without affecting other franchisees
Multi-Brand Franchise Groups
Some franchise groups operate multiple brands. The Alliance supports separate brand environments within a single management account, allowing:
- Brand A and Brand B content completely isolated (franchisees can only see their own brand)
- Group-level reporting across both brands
- Shared infrastructure and billing
Deployment Model
Franchisor provides hardware — Hardware standardisation across the network is a common approach. The franchisor specifies and procures screens and players, bundled into the franchise fee or fit-out package. All locations have identical, known hardware.
Franchisee provides hardware — Alternative approach: the franchisor specifies the minimum hardware standard, but franchisees source their own. The Alliance provides the software layer that works across approved hardware types.
Central billing — The franchisor pays the Alliance on behalf of the network and passes costs to franchisees via the royalty or service fee structure.
Onboarding a New Franchisee
When a new franchisee opens:
- The franchisor creates a new location in the Alliance dashboard
- Assigns the standard franchise template and playlists
- Ships or specifies the hardware
- The franchisee or installer pairs the screens using the standard pairing process
- Franchisor content goes live immediately on first boot
- Franchisee is given access to their content zone with the approved template library
A new location can be live with fully branded signage on the day it opens.
