How to Buy a Digital Signage Screen — The 2026 Buyer's Guide

Commercial Screen vs Consumer TV
The biggest mistake new buyers make is purchasing consumer TVs for a commercial installation. Consumer TVs are designed for 4–8 hours of daily use in a home environment. Used as digital signage, they typically fail within 12–18 months from overheating.
Commercial screens are designed for 16–24 hours of continuous operation and include:
- Higher brightness (400–700 nits vs 250–300 for consumer TVs)
- Higher temperature tolerance (45°C ambient vs 35°C for consumer)
- Remote management (RS-232 and IP control for power scheduling)
- Anti-theft mount points that accept commercial security mounts
- Portrait orientation support without voiding the warranty
- Longer warranties (3–5 years vs 1–2 years)
For any commercial installation running more than 8 hours per day, specify commercial screens only.
Key Specifications to Evaluate
Brightness (Nits)
Brightness determines whether your content is readable in the ambient lighting conditions.
| Environment | Minimum Brightness |
|---|---|
| Enclosed indoor, no windows | 350 nits |
| Indoor near windows | 500 nits |
| Semi-outdoor (covered but bright) | 700 nits |
| Direct sunlight (south-facing window, outdoor) | 1,500+ nits |
The Alliance’s hardware partners offer screens from 350 to 3,000 nits for every environment.
Panel Technology
IPS (In-Plane Switching) — Wide viewing angles (170°+), accurate colours, standard contrast. The right choice for most indoor signage applications.
VA (Vertical Alignment) — Better contrast ratio than IPS, narrower viewing angle. Good for screens viewed head-on in a fixed location.
OLED — Perfect blacks, unlimited contrast, stunning colour accuracy. Premium pricing. Not suitable for static content or bright environments (image burn-in risk).
E-ink — Very low power, readable in bright sunlight, excellent for shelf-edge pricing and slow-updating displays. Not suitable for video.
Screen Size and Viewing Distance
The minimum viewing distance for text to be readable scales with screen size. Rule of thumb: the screen diagonal in inches × 2 = the maximum comfortable viewing distance in feet.
| Screen Size | Maximum Viewing Distance |
|---|---|
| 32” | 5.3m |
| 43” | 7.2m |
| 55” | 9.1m |
| 65” | 10.8m |
| 75” | 12.5m |
For a large open-plan office lobby where viewers could be up to 10 metres away, a 65” or larger screen is needed.
Haze Rating
Haze rating (sometimes called “anti-glare coating”) measures how much the screen’s surface diffuses direct light. For screens in areas with strong ambient lighting or direct sunlight, a higher haze rating (25–45%) reduces glare. For enclosed spaces, a lower haze rating (5–15%) preserves colour saturation and contrast.
Orientation
Determine your orientation requirements before purchasing. Portrait orientation (taller than wide) requires a screen that:
- Has cooling designed to work in portrait (many consumer TVs overheat)
- Has a panel that works in portrait (most IPS panels do; some VA panels have issues with backlighting in portrait)
Specify portrait-rated screens for all portrait installations.
