Digital Signage Troubleshooting Guide — Fix Common Problems Fast

Technician troubleshooting a digital signage screen installation

Screen Shows a Black Image or “No Signal”

Most likely cause: The screen is on the wrong input, or the media player isn’t outputting a signal.

Troubleshooting steps:

  1. Check the screen’s input selector (press the input/source button on the remote control or screen menu)
  2. Confirm the HDMI cable is seated firmly at both ends (player and screen)
  3. Try a different HDMI cable — cables fail more often than people expect
  4. If the player has an LED status light, check whether it’s on (player powered) or off (not powered)
  5. Confirm the player’s power supply is connected and the outlet is live
  6. Try a different HDMI port on the screen
  7. Connect the HDMI cable to a laptop to verify the cable works

If the screen shows a signal from the laptop but not the player, the player needs attention. See “Player is offline” below.

Player Shows Pairing Code But Won’t Appear in Dashboard

Most likely cause: Network connectivity issue — the player can’t reach the Alliance servers.

Troubleshooting steps:

  1. Verify the player is connected to the network (ethernet cable seated, or Wi-Fi credentials entered correctly)
  2. Test internet access from the same network using a phone or laptop
  3. Check that port 443 (HTTPS) is not blocked by a firewall. The Alliance requires outbound access on port 443 to app.r52signage.com and cdn.r52signage.com
  4. Try a different network (mobile hotspot) to rule out local network issues
  5. If behind a corporate firewall, ask IT to allow outbound HTTPS to Alliance domains

Content Is Not Updating on Screen

Most likely cause: The player is offline or the content has been scheduled for a future time.

Troubleshooting steps:

  1. Check the Alliance dashboard — is the screen shown as online (green dot) or offline (grey/red)?
  2. If offline: check the network connection and restart the player
  3. If online: check the scheduled playlist — is the new content in the active playlist?
  4. Check the content item’s start date and time — has it started yet?
  5. Check whether an emergency override is active (it overrides all scheduled content)
  6. Try forcing a sync: in the dashboard, click the screen > “Force sync”
  7. Wait 60 seconds after a force sync for the player to download and display the new content

Screen Shows Outdated Content

Most likely cause: The player is running in offline mode — it lost its connection and is playing the last cached playlist.

Troubleshooting steps:

  1. Check network connectivity (can the player ping the internet?)
  2. Restart the player — this often resolves temporary connection issues
  3. Check the dashboard last-seen time — if it’s hours or days ago, the connection has been down for that period
  4. If the player is behind a managed switch, check whether the switch port is active
  5. If using Wi-Fi, check signal strength at the player’s location

Screen Is Very Bright or Very Dark

Most likely cause: The screen’s auto-brightness is responding to ambient light, or the brightness is set incorrectly for the environment.

Troubleshooting steps:

  1. Access the screen’s OSD (on-screen display) using the menu button on the screen or remote
  2. Disable auto-brightness / ambient light sensor
  3. Set brightness manually:
    • Indoor, no windows: 30–50%
    • Indoor near windows: 60–80%
    • Semi-outdoor: 80–100% (if max brightness is under 700 nits, the screen may not be suitable)
  4. Set the screen colour temperature to 6500K (D65) for accurate colour

Player Reboots Randomly

Most likely cause: Overheating or power supply issues.

Troubleshooting steps:

  1. Check the player’s temperature — if it’s warm to the touch or the case is hot, improve ventilation
  2. Ensure the player is not enclosed in a sealed cabinet without ventilation
  3. Check the power supply — an underpowered supply causes reboots. Use the official power supply for the Alliance Player
  4. If using a consumer USB charger, replace it with a certified power supply
  5. Check the player for dust — excessive dust on the board causes thermal throttling and reboots

Screen Turns Off After a Few Minutes

Most likely cause: The screen’s power saving mode is turning it off.

Troubleshooting steps:

  1. Access the screen’s power settings via the OSD menu
  2. Disable sleep, standby, and power saving features
  3. Set “No signal power off” to “Off” (some screens power off if they detect no HDMI signal)
  4. Set a custom power schedule in the Alliance dashboard (this keeps the screen on during operating hours regardless of screen settings on some models)

Getting More Help

If these steps don’t resolve the issue, the Alliance support team is available via:

  • Live chat (in the dashboard, bottom right)
  • Email: support@r52signage.com
  • Detailed diagnostic report: in the dashboard, go to screen settings > “Download diagnostic log” and attach it to your support ticket

For hardware issues that can’t be resolved remotely, we can coordinate an on-site visit through our network of certified installation partners.
