What Is DOOH?

Digital out-of-home (DOOH) advertising is any advertising that appears on digital screens in public spaces — digital billboards on motorways, screens in shopping centres, displays in transit hubs, digital bus shelters, and screens in bars, gyms, and petrol stations.

DOOH is the fastest-growing channel in outdoor advertising, expected to represent 45% of all OOH spending by 2027.

Why DOOH Is Growing

Dynamic content — Unlike static posters, DOOH screens can display different content at different times, in response to triggers (weather, traffic, time of day), and can be updated instantly.

Programmatic buying — DOOH inventory can now be bought through programmatic platforms (The Trade Desk, Vistar Media, Hivestack) using the same data-driven targeting approaches used in digital display and video.

Audience measurement — Anonymised audience measurement using mobile data, cameras with computer vision, and footfall counting gives DOOH comparable accountability to digital channels.

High attention — Studies show DOOH generates higher attention and recall than online display, because viewers are in a different mindset (engaged with their environment) than when they’re multitasking on a screen.

DOOH Formats

Large format billboards — High-impact, highway-visible screens. Typically 48-sheet equivalent (12m × 3m). Limited text, strong visuals, one message.

Street furniture (6-sheet) — Bus shelters, phone boxes, urban panels. Closer viewing distance allows more information. High dwell time at bus stops.

Transit screens — Underground stations, train platforms, airport departure halls. High dwell time, premium audiences.

Mall and retail media — Screens inside shopping centres at key pedestrian junctions. Proximity to point of purchase makes these high-converting environments.

Place-based media — Screens in bars, gyms, petrol stations, GP waiting rooms. Highly contextual environments with strong audience targeting.

DOOH Buying Models

Direct buy — Purchase specific screens from a media owner. Full control, premium placements, minimum spends typically apply. Best for location-specific campaigns.

Network buy — Purchase screen time across a network (e.g., all JCDECAUX screens in London, or all screens in a gym network). Broad reach with consistent creative across the network.

Programmatic — Buy impressions dynamically through a DSP, targeting audiences based on anonymised location data, time of day, weather, and contextual signals. The closest DOOH comes to digital display targeting.

Private marketplace — A curated collection of premium inventory available programmatically but requiring a direct relationship with the media owner.

Creative Specifications

DOOH creative must work differently from other advertising formats:

Dwell time — Most DOOH exposures are 2–8 seconds. If your message can’t be absorbed in 3 seconds, it’s too complex.

Copy length — Maximum 7 words per screen. Test your copy by reading it aloud in 3 seconds. If you can’t, cut it.

Contrast — Very high contrast is essential. Screens in direct sunlight have reduced effective brightness. Black text on white, or white text on a vivid colour.

Logo — Display your logo prominently. A beautiful ad that viewers can’t attribute is wasted.

Call to action — Simple, memorable. A URL people can remember, a hashtag, or a QR code if dwell time is long enough.

Running DOOH on Your Own Screens

If you own or manage your own screen network — a retail estate, a food service chain, a gym network — the Alliance platform lets you run DOOH-style advertising on your screens while maintaining full control over your audience and your advertising relationships.

You can sell advertising inventory on your screens to relevant brands, using the Alliance’s scheduling system to manage ad rotations, proof-of-play reporting, and content approval workflows.

The Alliance’s white-label option lets you brand the platform as your own media product — “Alliance Media Network” or your own name — and sell advertising through your existing sales team.
