Interactive Digital Signage — Touchscreens, Kiosks, and Self-Service

Beyond the Display — When Passive Becomes Interactive
Most digital signage is one-way: the screen shows content, the viewer consumes it. Interactive digital signage changes this dynamic — the viewer becomes a participant, using touch or gesture to access the information or service they want.
The result is a richer experience, higher engagement, and new service capabilities that don’t require staff.
Self-Service Ordering Kiosks
The best-known interactive application: self-service ordering in quick service restaurants and fast-casual dining. Data from major QSR chains consistently shows:
- 20–35% higher average check from kiosk orders vs. counter orders
- Reduced queue times (a kiosk processes an order in parallel with counter staff)
- Reduced order errors (the customer confirms what they want)
- Upsell automation (suggested add-ons at the confirmation stage)
The Alliance platform supports self-service ordering via integration with POS systems. The order flows from the kiosk screen to the kitchen display and payment terminal without staff involvement.
Wayfinding Kiosks
Interactive floor plans that allow visitors to search for a destination and receive step-by-step directions. Best for:
- Hospitals and healthcare campuses
- Large office buildings
- Shopping centres
- Universities
- Exhibition centres
The key design principles for wayfinding kiosks:
Speed — The interaction should take under 30 seconds. A visitor who needs 3 minutes to find their department on a touchscreen would have been better served by printed signage.
Search first — Include a search bar. Most users want to type a destination name, not browse a map.
Big targets — Touch targets must be at least 44×44 pixels at the display’s native resolution. Fingers are not cursors.
Offline fallback — Display a static floor map if the interactive system is unavailable.
Product Information and Configurators
Retail environments use interactive screens to extend the in-store catalogue beyond the physical space:
- Browse the full product range (not just what’s on the shelf)
- Compare product specifications side by side
- Configure a product (choose colour, size, options)
- Check stock availability in-store or at other branches
- Scan a product barcode for detailed information
Check-In and Registration
Interactive kiosks reduce queue time and labour cost for check-in processes:
- Hotel check-in — Guests retrieve their key by entering their reservation number, bypass reception queues
- Event registration — Attendees print badges without queue at the registration desk
- Healthcare check-in — Patients confirm arrival for appointments without speaking to reception
- Visitor management — Visitors register, print badges, and notify hosts automatically
Gamification and Engagement
Interactive signage creates opportunities for engagement beyond information:
- Spin to win competitions at events
- Quiz games in waiting areas
- Photo booths with branded overlays
- Social wall voting (which design do you prefer?)
These applications work exceptionally well at trade shows, brand events, and high-traffic retail.
Gesture Control (Without Touch)
For hygiene-sensitive environments (post-pandemic healthcare, food service), gesture control replaces the touchscreen:
- Hand gesture recognition (wave to advance, raise hand to select)
- Proximity sensing (approach triggers content)
- QR code scanning on personal devices (the user’s phone becomes the input device)
The Alliance supports all of these interaction modes through its media player API.
Accessibility for Interactive Signage
Interactive screens must be accessible:
- Screen height: centre of touchscreen at 1.2m for wheelchair users
- Touch target size: minimum 44×44mm at 72dpi equivalent
- Colour contrast: 4.5:1 for all text
- Alternative input: include keyboard or simple button panel where touchscreen is inaccessible
- Audio output option for users who cannot read the screen
- Timeout with auto-reset (screens must not lock up if a user walks away mid-interaction)
