LG webOS Digital Signage — Setup Guide and Best Practices

LG webOS: Signage Without a Media Player
LG’s commercial display range — the LG Business Solutions line — ships with webOS built in. This means the Alliance digital signage application runs directly on the display itself, with no separate media player required.
This is called a System-on-Chip (SoC) deployment. The benefits:
- Fewer components to install and maintain
- No media player to power, cool, or replace
- One fewer HDMI cable and power socket required
- Cleaner installation (especially for wall-mounted displays)
The trade-off is processing power: a built-in SoC is less powerful than a dedicated media player, which affects complex content (4K video, multiple data integrations, complex animations).
Compatible LG Models
The Alliance supports LG webOS on the following commercial display series:
LG UH7F Series (4K UHD, webOS 4.1)
- 43”, 49”, 55”, 65”, 75”, 86”
- Suitable for standard digital signage content
- Maximum content complexity: standard video, images, web widgets
LG UH5F Series (FHD, webOS 4.0)
- 32”, 43”, 49”, 55”
- Entry-level commercial display
- Best for static images, simple animations, text-heavy content
LG UM3D/UM5D Series (4K, webOS 6.0)
- Current generation, recommended for new installations
- 4K HDR support
- Improved processor for more complex content
Note: LG TV (consumer) displays use a different version of webOS and are not supported for commercial use. Ensure you have an LG Business Solutions commercial display, not a consumer LG TV.
Step 1: First-Time Setup
New LG commercial displays need an initial setup before the Alliance app can be installed:
- Power on the display
- Select the input source as “Home Dashboard”
- If prompted, complete the initial setup wizard (language, region, network)
- Navigate to the LG webOS Home screen
Step 2: Connect to Your Network
The Alliance app requires a network connection to register and receive content:
Ethernet (recommended):
- Connect an ethernet cable to the display’s LAN port
- Network connection is established automatically
Wi-Fi:
- Navigate to Settings > General > Network
- Select “Wi-Fi”
- Choose your network and enter the password
Verify network connection: Settings > General > Network > Check Network Status
Step 3: Install the Alliance App
Method A: LG webOS App Store
- Navigate to Home > LG Content Store
- Search for “Alliance Digital Signage”
- Click Install
Method B: Enterprise Deployment via LG’s SuperSign CMS For enterprise deployments, the Alliance app can be deployed remotely via LG’s device management platform.
Method C: USB Installation (for networks without internet access) Contact Alliance support for the offline app package.
Step 4: Register Your Screen
- Open the Alliance app
- A 6-character pairing code appears on screen
- In the Alliance dashboard, navigate to Screens > Add Screen
- Enter the pairing code
- Name your screen and assign a playlist
Optimal Display Settings for Alliance Content
LG commercial displays have settings that affect digital signage quality:
Picture Mode: Set to “Signage” or “Standard” — not “Vivid” or “Cinema” (these alter colours in ways that may not match your designed content)
Auto-Off / No Signal Power Off: Navigate to Settings > General > Timer and disable “Auto Off” and “No Signal Power Off”. Commercial displays may have these enabled by default for energy saving — disable them for 24/7 signage operation.
Brightness:
- Indoor standard lighting: 250–400 nits (40–60% brightness)
- Window facing or high ambient light: 500+ nits (increase accordingly)
- Avoid maximum brightness for long periods — reduces panel lifespan
Screen Burn Protection: LG webOS includes Pixel Refresh and Orbiter features for OLED displays. For digital signage with static elements (logos, borders), enable the Orbiter function which subtly shifts the image to prevent burn-in.
Managing LG Screens in the Alliance Dashboard
LG webOS screens appear in the Alliance dashboard alongside any other screen types. Full remote management is available:
- Remote reboot (from the Alliance dashboard — no need for physical access)
- Screenshot capture (verify what’s playing remotely)
- Content push and playlist assignment
- Schedule management
- Screen health monitoring (online/offline status, last seen time)
Content Limitations on LG webOS
Compared to dedicated media players, webOS SoC deployments have limitations:
- 4K video: Supported on webOS 6.0+ models, but 4K decoding may cause frame drops with complex scenes. Test your specific content.
- Multiple live data feeds: Combining 3+ live data widgets (weather, social, news, live prices) may impact performance on older webOS versions.
- Complex animations: Heavy CSS animations or particle effects may appear choppy. Use pre-rendered video for complex motion graphics.
For complex deployments, an external Alliance Player or Windows media player is recommended.
LG Screen Scaling and Overscan
By default, LG commercial displays may add overscan (cropping the edges of the image). To disable:
- Navigate to Settings > Picture > Aspect Ratio
- Set to “Full” (not “16:9” or “Zoom”)
This ensures content designed for 1920×1080 or 3840×2160 displays correctly without cropping.
