Windows Digital Signage Players — Setup and Configuration Guide

Windows as a Digital Signage Platform

Windows-based media players are widely used in commercial digital signage, particularly in enterprise environments where Windows management tools (Group Policy, Intune, SCCM) are already in place.

The Alliance runs on Windows as a Chrome or Edge browser-based application, or as a dedicated Windows app. Either approach works; the dedicated app provides tighter integration with the Alliance platform.

Mini PCs for signage:

  • Intel NUC 13 Pro — Intel Core i3/i5/i7, up to 64GB RAM, 2× HDMI, Thunderbolt 4. Excellent for high-complexity multi-screen deployments.
  • ASUS NUC 14 — Similar spec to Intel NUC, slightly more compact.
  • Beelink SER series — Budget-friendly AMD Ryzen mini PC. 1080p content at a fraction of NUC pricing.
  • Lenovo ThinkCentre M series (Tiny) — Commercial-grade reliability, enterprise warranty, good enterprise management support.

Minimum spec for 1080p content:

  • CPU: Intel Core i3 10th gen or equivalent AMD Ryzen 5
  • RAM: 4GB (8GB recommended)
  • Storage: 64GB SSD (128GB recommended)
  • GPU: Integrated Intel Iris Xe or AMD Radeon (sufficient for 1080p; dedicated GPU for 4K)

For 4K content:

  • CPU: Intel Core i5 or i7 (12th gen or newer)
  • RAM: 8GB minimum
  • GPU: Intel Arc or NVIDIA GeForce (even entry-level discrete GPU significantly improves 4K playback)

Installing the Alliance Windows App

  1. Sign in to the Alliance dashboard at app.r52signage.com
  2. Navigate to Screens > Add Screen > Windows
  3. Download the Alliance Windows installer (.exe)
  4. Run the installer on the target Windows machine (admin rights required)
  5. The Alliance app opens and displays a 6-character pairing code
  6. In the Alliance dashboard, enter the pairing code to register the screen

Configuring Windows for Signage

A Windows PC configured for digital signage needs adjustments to prevent interruptions:

Power settings:

  1. Settings > System > Power & Sleep
  2. Set “Screen turns off after” to Never
  3. Set “PC goes to sleep after” to Never
  4. Alternatively, in Power Options (Control Panel): Set the plan to “High Performance” and configure “Turn off display” and “Put computer to sleep” to Never

Windows Update: Automatic updates and restarts will interrupt signage. Configure Windows Update:

  1. Settings > Windows Update > Advanced Options
  2. Set “Active Hours” to cover your signage operating hours (up to 18 hours)
  3. Enable “Notify to schedule restart” to prevent automatic restarts
  4. Consider deferring feature updates (not security updates) by 30 days

Notifications:

  1. Settings > System > Notifications & Actions
  2. Turn off all notifications, or use Focus Assist to suppress them
  3. Disable Action Centre pop-ups

Startup behaviour: Add the Alliance app to Windows startup:

  1. Press Win+R and type shell:startup
  2. Create a shortcut to the Alliance app in the Startup folder
  3. The Alliance app will launch automatically on Windows boot

Windows Kiosk Mode

For complete lockdown (preventing users from accessing Windows):

Single-app Kiosk Mode (Windows 10/11 Pro or Enterprise):

  1. Settings > Accounts > Family & other users > Set up a kiosk
  2. Create a kiosk account
  3. Select the Alliance app as the kiosk application
  4. The screen will boot directly into the Alliance app with no access to Windows

This is equivalent to Android Kiosk mode — the screen shows only Alliance content, no Windows interface is accessible.

Limitations: Single-app kiosk mode works well for simple deployments. For enterprise deployments with multiple screens and complex management, Windows Enterprise with Intune MDM provides more control.

Windows Enterprise Management with Intune

For organisations using Microsoft Intune for device management:

  • Enrol the signage PC in Intune during Windows OOBE
  • Deploy the Alliance app via Intune app deployment
  • Configure kiosk mode via Intune configuration profiles
  • Manage Windows Update policy centrally
  • Monitor device health from the Intune portal
  • Remote wipe or restart devices from Intune

The Alliance supports MDM-based deployment for enterprise Windows networks.

Remote Management

The Alliance dashboard provides remote management for Windows players:

  • Screenshot capture (verify what’s playing on the screen remotely)
  • Remote restart (restart the Alliance app without touching the PC)
  • Content push and playlist assignment
  • Screen health monitoring

Remote access to Windows: For deeper remote access (Windows desktop, troubleshooting), install a remote desktop tool on the signage PC (Windows Remote Desktop, TeamViewer, or AnyDesk). Restrict access to IT staff only.

Comparing Windows to Alliance Player

Criterion Alliance Player Windows Mini PC
Cost Medium Low–High (varies by spec)
Setup complexity Low Medium–High
24/7 reliability ★★★★★ ★★★★
Enterprise management Alliance only Intune + Alliance
OS updates interrupting signage Never Risk without policy
4K support ✅ ✅ (dedicated GPU)
Multi-screen output 1× HDMI 2–4× (depending on model)

When to choose Windows: Enterprise environments with existing Windows/Intune infrastructure; deployments requiring multi-screen output from one player; situations where Windows-specific software (a data feed application, a local database) needs to run alongside signage.
